Reality Checkpoint
At the crossing of the paths on Parker’s Piece, Reality Checkpoint gives a name to an otherwise invisible border in Cambridge: between the colleges and the working town, and between the freedoms of student life and the demands of earning a living. In Event/Horizon, Steve initially understands the inscription as a joke at the expense of stoned undergraduates finding their way through the fenland fog. Once he takes a job at the dairy, it acquires a more personal meaning: he is crossing into a world of early starts, “crash gearboxes and canny gaffers”. Yet the boundary is less straightforward than the name suggests. Steve carries his student assumptions and literary ambitions across it, while discovering that the way others see him depends on which side he appears to occupy. The lamp post marks a change in perspective as much as a change of territory: becoming an adult involves learning that his own version of reality is only one among several.
