What is a Zettelkasten?
A Zettelkasten (German for “slip box”) is a decentralized knowledge management and thinking method—popularized by sociologist Niklas Luhmann—built on small, self-contained notes rather than rigid, hierarchical folders. In practice, you capture ideas from your reading or thinking as atomic notes (each containing a single concept written entirely in your own words), assign each an identifier, and link it directly to existing related notes using bidirectional references or index pointers. By emphasizing cross-links, branching trains of thought, and emergence over top-down categorization, the archive acts as a conversational thinking partner, allowing unexpected connections and research themes to surface organically over time as the web of notes grows.
