Godfrey Golzen

Godfrey is head of the Architectural Press book division. He has expanded the list beyond architecture into social policy and cultural subjects.
The memoir later gives him a substantial personal history: born in Berlin in 1930 into a Jewish family assimilated to Lutheranism, he left Germany with his family in 1938, was educated in Edinburgh, studied English and German, served in the Manchester Regiment, and entered publishing in the 1950s.
Godfrey seeks successful, culturally serious publishing while operating comfortably within commercial institutions. He is attentive to books, contracts, history, language, and the social rituals of publishing.
Godfrey becomes a mentor and model for the narrator. He:

- Introduces him to senior publishers at the American Booksellers Convention in Atlanta.
- Shares his knowledge of international publishing.
- Takes him to the Frankfurt Book Fair.

Godfrey is cultured, generous, sociable, and commercially experienced. His German identity is not presented as a simple nationality marker; it is connected to exile, assimilation, and language.
