Grace Mitchell

Fictional character · In The Parallax View

Established identity and circumstances

Grace is a scholar of literature, former supervisor and former lover of Steve. She is based at Newnham College and is working on a book about poetic movements in Europe. She has published a successful book on existentialism and has been commissioned to write further work.

She is tasked with watching Müller after his arrival at Cambridge. Later she discloses that she had previously worked as an informant for the Stasi and subsequently became an informant for SIS.

Desires, pressures and conflicts

Grace wants:

  • intellectual recognition and eventual academic advancement;
  • emotional and sexual companionship;
  • motherhood, though this conflicts with professional ambition;
  • to recover or renegotiate her relationship with Steve;
  • to protect her reputation;
  • to help Ulrike enter Cambridge.

Her central conflict is between self-preservation and ethical disclosure. She once chooses her academic career over honesty with Steve, allowing Sheena to blackmail her into ending their relationship.

Relationships

  • Steve: Former teacher and lover; their relationship has a strong asymmetry of age, authority and education. They renew sexual intimacy in Somerset but deliberately avoid formal commitments.
  • Müller: Their relationship is partly intellectual, partly sexual and partly strategic. Grace benefits from his prestige but recognises the moral compromises involved.
  • Ulrike: Grace first evaluates Ulrike as a possible student and later becomes a mentor and host. Their relationship develops into intellectual admiration, emotional intimacy and, by Grace’s later statement, sexual love.
  • Sheena: Former handler and coercive superior. Sheena threatens Grace’s career and reputation.
  • June and Gideon: Her parents’ deaths activate guilt and regret, particularly her sense that she neglected June.
  • Eugenia: Grace’s reaction to Eugenia is explicitly envy and recognition. She envies Eugenia’s openly lived identity and freedom of expression; the text does not establish that Grace is sexually attracted to Eugenia herself.

Agency

Grace:

  • accepts the task of monitoring Müller;
  • resumes contact with Steve despite emotional risk;
  • assesses Ulrike’s academic claims;
  • invites Ulrike to stay at Glisson Road;
  • introduces her to Newnham and its scholars;
  • helps decode Müller’s archive;
  • identifies the handwriting and staging problems in the S&M photographs;
  • warns Steve not to confront Sheena;
  • discloses her own Stasi and SIS history;
  • reopens her sexual relationship with Steve without imposing the earlier reproductive contract.

Her choices have consequences. Her earlier silence helps destroy Steve’s trust; her later honesty creates the possibility of a less coercive relationship.

Voice and behaviour

Grace is intelligent, fluent and self-aware but often evasive. She can shift rapidly between academic analysis, emotional candour, erotic directness and self-reproach. Her scholarly vocabulary allows her to interpret the archive, but she is also vulnerable to the very power structures she analyses.

Development

Grace moves from controlled academic observer to emotionally exposed participant. She begins by treating Ulrike as a problem in academic and intelligence management. By the end she has acknowledged:

  • her own history of betrayal;
  • her desire for Ulrike;
  • her fear of losing Steve;
  • the damage caused by her obedience to Sheena;
  • the possibility of a more open relationship.

Her development is toward honesty, though not complete resolution.

Knowledge, suspicions and misunderstandings

Grace correctly suspects:

  • the S&M photographs are staged rather than conventional surveillance;
  • the handwriting on the envelope is not Müller’s;
  • the images may be a message from Sheena;
  • the apparent birthmark is not reliable evidence of identity;
  • Ulrike and Katrin are being made interchangeable.

She initially treats the woman staying with her as Ulrike and does not know that Katrin later replaces her. Her reading of the photographs identifies the masked figure as possibly Ulrike, but that interpretation is later corrected: Sheena states that the woman was Katrin wearing counterfeit makeup.

Position at the end

Grace is in Somerset dealing with June’s death and planning a funeral. She and Steve have resumed intimacy without a settled commitment. She knows that the public story about Ulrike’s suicide is false, but Steve’s disclosure places her under an explicit obligation of secrecy. She is simultaneously Steve’s lover, an intelligence subject, a former informant and a potential liability.
