Hope and Anchor

In the mid-1970s, the Hope and Anchor on Upper Street in Islington served as one of the most vital crucibles in British music, bridging the transition from the rootsy pub rock phenomenon into early punk and new wave. Between 1974 and 1977, its low-ceilinged stage hosted early, defining sets from pub rock stalwarts like Dr. Feelgood, Ducks Deluxe, and Ian Dury (with Kilburn and the High Roads), quickly becoming ground zero for rising punk and new wave acts such as The Stranglers, The Jam, The Police, and Elvis Costello.
