Perched on the eastern edge of Málaga’s Costa del Sol where the foothills of the Sierra de Almijara tumble directly into the Mediterranean, Nerja is a coastal town that largely resisted the concrete high-rise boom of its western neighbors, preserving the charm of a traditional Andalusian fishing village. Its whitewashed old quarter converges on the Balcón de Europa, a striking clifftop promenade built over a former coastal fortress that offers panoramic vistas of rugged headlands and sheltered sandy coves. Beyond its beaches, the town is renowned for the Cueva de Nerja, an expansive underground network of limestone caverns discovered in 1959 that features colossal stalactites, prehistoric cave art, and natural concert chambers.
